Just for information, both the server and client software were installed on Hardy, and I've used the latest version of the Nomachine packages and not the FreeNX packages. This isn't strictly necessary, and so I haven't included it. I know there are other how tos on the forum, but most seem to include a step about adding users. I'm posting what I did here in case someone else wants to give NX a try. What I wanted was for the connection to a remote machine to be as secure as possible, and more usable than VNC through an ssh tunnel, without having to jump through too many configuration hoops. So in the end I just waded through Nomachine's online documentation and help system. However, searching this forum and google turned up lots of conflicting instructions about how to configure things. Overall it's much faster than VNC and very simple to set up. Sorry if not clear or wrong. After struggling with VNC for some years I finally tried out Nomachine's NX server instead. Really immediately (i am not saying dropbox is bad, but "i use git": that sounds so pro-like, no?) Git at gitorious or github might be an option (you said you got coding stuff, yes?) Very fast. If i am not wrong both: filezilla and gftp should work too when ssh is running remote (that way you had a gui, in case you prefer). sshfs-mount and then just access.Īnd the tons of other solution which are there.

You could also just rsync it from-to and to-from (sshfs seems a little more confortable, no need to get the names and path's correct. If the dropbox solution works for you: good. I can't say i am sad you gave up: i am not that keen on fiddling with it. So similar to what you said: sudden failures without being able to understand why. It was good, fast and all, but to be honest: it was a little bit touchy (i am not an expert for such stuff, also don't read documentation very close, but other things worked more reliable) But I've sort of given up on this for now
